What is the definition of out-of-gauge cargo?
Out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo exceeds the standard dimensions of a 20ft or 40ft dry shipping container — typically 5.9 metres long, 2.35 metres wide, and 2.35 metres high internally. Cargo that exceeds any of these dimensions in height, width, or length requires specialist equipment such as flat rack containers, open-top containers, or breakbulk vessel booking. Weight is also a factor — standard container floor loading limits are approximately 25–27 tonnes.
How early should I start planning an OOG or project cargo movement?
OOG cargo requires significantly more lead time than standard container freight. A minimum of 4 to 6 weeks before the intended vessel departure is recommended for most OOG movements; complex project cargo involving multiple pieces, customs permits, or heavy lift coordination may require 8 to 12 weeks. Starting the planning process at the factory — including a dimensional survey before the equipment is fully assembled — avoids the most common and costly OOG mistakes.
Do you manage oversized road transport permits for Australian delivery?
Yes. For cargo that exceeds standard road transport dimensions within Australia, our team manages the permit application process with the relevant state road authority. This includes route surveys, escort vehicle coordination, and timing restrictions for movements through metropolitan areas. We coordinate the Australian delivery — from port to your site — as part of our project cargo service, not as a separate engagement.
